Description
(Submitter supplied) The sex-determination mutant, Tasselseed5, fails to abort pistils in tassels and lower florets in ears. Proper sex-determination is necessary for hybrid seed production and is an active field of study within plant developmental biology. We performed RNASeq to find transcriptional signatures (in tassels) caused by the mutation. We found an overexpressed enzyme that catabolizes bioactive jasmonate thereby revealing that this gene, ZmCYP94B1, must be properly expressed for proper sex-determination. Differentially expressed genes implicated the gene in the important role of attenuation of wound-response which was confirmed by assaying a time-course of post-wounding leaf metabolites.
