Description
1. Comprehensively identify all genes expressed in the testes of An. gambiae and An. merus. What proportion of all genes are testes-expressed? 1a. Are there any genes only expressed in An. gambiae testes or only expressed in An. merus testes? 1b. What genes are differentially expressed in between An. gambiae and An. merus in the testes? 2. Comprehensively identify testes-specific genes in An. gambiae and An. merus. These will be genes that show no evidence for expression in the carcasses of An. gambiae/An. merus, but strong evidence for expression in the testes. What proportion of genes are testes-specific? What proportion of testes-expressed genes are testes-specific? 2a. Is this list of testes-specific genes different between An. gambiae and An. merus? 3. Are genes misexpressed in the testes of F1 hybrids? This would be a differential expression comparison between An. gambiae testes vs. hybrid testes and also An. merus testes vs. hybrid testes. Are there genes that are expressed significantly higher or lower in the F1 hybrids than in either parental species (i.e. misexpressed)? Large scale misexpression has been observed in Drosophila hybrids.
